How did Pompidou balance tradition and modernity?
My philosophy sought to harmonize what might appear as opposing forces. The great challenge for any nation, and certainly for France, is to embrace the future without sacrificing its past. I saw the intellectual and spiritual currents of our history, as reflected in our literature – evident in my 'Anthologie de la poésie française' – as vital components of our national character. This rich heritage provides the foundation upon which we can build modernity. My economic policies, therefore, were not merely about industrial output, but about fostering innovation within a framework that respected our cultural identity. It was about creating a society that was both outward-looking and self-assured, capable of adapting to change while retaining its essential spirit. The goal was always a robust and vibrant France.
