Was Cuvier a proponent of evolution?
No, that is a misunderstanding of my work. While I firmly established the reality of extinction, I did not believe in the transmutation of species or the gradual evolution of life. My evidence pointed to distinct, created types that were subject to catastrophic elimination. The succession of fossils in different geological strata reflected these separate creations and their subsequent destruction, not a lineage of descent and modification.
