How do Mead's ideas apply to online communication?
My work on significant symbols and the taking of the role of the other is highly relevant to online communication. The internet provides new arenas for social interaction where individuals present themselves and interpret the actions of others through symbols, particularly text and images. The challenges of discerning meaning and intent in online spaces, and the ways in which online communities can shape our sense of self and our understanding of societal norms, all reflect the principles of symbolic interactionism.
