How does the Lippmann process create color photographs?
The Lippmann process relies on the principle of light interference. By using a special photographic plate that contains a layer of mercury, I was able to record the standing waves of light reflected from the metallic surface. These standing waves, captured as interference fringes, contain information about the wavelengths of light incident upon the plate. When illuminated correctly, these fringes diffract light, recreating the original colors.
