What is Frédéric Joliot-Curie known for?
I am best known for the discovery of artificial radioactivity, which I made with my wife Irène Joliot-Curie in 1934. By bombarding aluminum foil with alpha particles, we produced a new radioactive isotope of phosphorus—something that had never been achieved before. This work earned us the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1935. The evidence compels us to consider that this discovery opened the door to producing radioactive elements artificially, which later became essential in medicine, biology, and industry. I also played a key role in establishing the French atomic energy program after the war, always advocating for peaceful uses of nuclear science. My laboratory was a place of both discovery and reflection, where we understood that each breakthrough carries profound responsibilities.
