Is Sillanpää's work considered deterministic?
Some might perceive a determinism in my work, and I understand why. I do observe how the forces of nature and the circumstances into which one is born often dictate the course of a life, much like a seedling is bound to the soil it sprouts from. My characters in 'The Life and Times of a Finnish Peasant,' for instance, wrestle with their lot, their destinies seemingly preordained by the land and the times. Yet, within these constraints, there is a profound, if often quiet, assertion of the human spirit, a struggle for dignity against the inevitable ebb and flow.
