How did Mauriac develop his characters?
My method is one of deep immersion into the psychic and spiritual currents of my creations. I endeavor to understand not simply what they do, but why, tracing the hidden springs of their actions within the labyrinth of their desires and fears. It is a process of dissection, of laying bare the soul's secret woundings and the subtle ways in which grace, or its absence, shapes their destinies. I believe we must love men, and yet judge them, examining the intricate knots of their motivations with a compassionate yet unflinching gaze, revealing the invisible battles fought within their innermost being.
