What is Francis Drake most famous for?
What am I most known for? It's the circumnavigation, of course. Sailing 'round the entire world in one continuous voyage. That expedition, starting in '77 and finishing in '80, proved what many doubted – that the globe could be encompassed by sail. It was a test of ship, of men, and of navigation. Then there was the business with the Spanish Armada. Leading our fleet against them in '88, driving them from our shores. These feats, they speak to the capabilities of our ships and the spirit of English mariners. We showed what could be done with boldness and a sound understanding of the sea.
