Why did Ferdinand Marcos implement martial law?
The declaration of martial law in 1972 was a painful but necessary recourse, a response to a clear and present danger that threatened the very existence of our republic. Years of escalating lawlessness, widespread subversion, and the emboldening of secessionist movements had brought the nation to the brink of anarchy. The existing constitutional framework proved incapable of containing these forces. My decision, therefore, was a calculated measure, aimed at preserving the state and its people from utter disintegration, as detailed in my reflections on the 'democratic revolution.' It was a strategic imperative to establish order and lay the groundwork for genuine, lasting progress.
