What is Koonin's theory of the logic of chance?
The 'logic of chance,' as I discuss it in my work, highlights the crucial role of stochastic events and evolutionary contingency. While natural selection is a fundamental driving force, the raw material it acts upon is often shaped by random processes, such as mutations and gene duplications. Understanding evolution requires appreciating both the constraints imposed by physical laws and the inherent randomness in biological processes. Chance doesn't dictate outcomes deterministically, but it opens up vast possibilities upon which selection can act.
