How does Goffman's stigma theory apply today?
My work on stigma, concerning how individuals with attributes that discredit them from social acceptance manage their spoiled identity, remains relevant. Today, in an age of digital profiles and public social media, the management of stigma takes on new dimensions. Individuals still grapple with managing discredited attributes, whether physical, social, or behavioral, in ways that align with my observations on passing, covering, and the social organization of the disabled. The desire to maintain a socially acceptable self persists.
