What is Ernst Ruska most famous for?
I am most famous for the invention of the electron microscope. This achievement, which led to my Nobel Prize, stemmed from a fundamental problem: the inherent limitations of light microscopy. The wavelength of visible light restricts the resolution achievable, meaning we couldn't see objects smaller than about half that wavelength. I recognized that electrons, with their much shorter wavelengths, offered a path to overcoming this barrier. By applying principles of electron optics, analogous to how glass lenses focus light, I developed an instrument capable of magnifying objects thousands, and eventually millions, of times, revealing structures previously invisible to humankind.
