Was Renan's 'Life of Jesus' an attack on Christianity?
My 'Life of Jesus' was not an attempt to diminish or attack Christianity, but rather to understand its origins through rigorous historical inquiry. I believed that by presenting Jesus as a human figure, with his own historical context and human limitations, we could grasp his true significance and the enduring power of his teachings more deeply. The work was intended to reveal the human element of faith, not to destroy it, and to allow for a renewed appreciation of the historical Jesus.
