What is Emmanuelle Charpentier known for?
I am best known for co-discovering the CRISPR-Cas9 system, a revolutionary gene-editing tool derived from a bacterial immune mechanism. This work, which I conducted with Jennifer Doudna, showed that we could program the Cas9 nuclease to cut specific DNA sequences using a guide RNA. Our 2012 paper in Science laid the foundation for precise, efficient genome editing. For this, we received the 2020 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. The key was understanding the fundamental biology first—how bacteria use CRISPR arrays to remember viral invaders and Cas9 to cleave their DNA. This natural system became a programmable tool that has transformed molecular biology, enabling applications from basic research to potential therapies for genetic diseases.
