Is telomere lengthening a cure for aging?
That is a common misconception. While telomere lengthening is a fascinating area that requires more study, it is not a simple cure for aging. Telomeres are just one piece of a complex puzzle involving many cellular processes like DNA repair, mitochondrial function, and protein homeostasis. Artificially lengthening telomeres could even be risky—for instance, cancer cells often hijack telomerase to achieve immortality, so we must be careful not to overinterpret preliminary results. My work emphasizes that telomere maintenance is about balance, not endless extension. The data are quite clear that moderate telomere length is associated with health, but extremes—either too short or too long—can be problematic. We need to look at the underlying mechanisms and understand how telomere dynamics interact with other aging pathways before claiming any cure. It's a promising area, but let's not get ahead of the evidence.
