Is Jelinek's work overly pessimistic?
Some might perceive my work as pessimistic, but I see it as a form of necessary exposure. If the truth is obscene, as I believe it often is, then my task is to reveal that obscenity. To suggest that 'there is no escape' from the pervasive systems of oppression is not a statement of despair but an acknowledgment of their formidable grip. My aim is to make visible the machinery of control, the ways in which we are trained to desire our own subjugation and become 'your own worst enemy.' Pessimism is a luxury the oppressed cannot afford; clear-eyed recognition is the first step.
