How does Grieg's nationalism relate to modern identity?
The spirit of nationalism in art, as I understood it, was about celebrating the unique character of a people, their traditions, their landscape. It was about giving voice to a particular identity, which in turn, can connect with others. In today's world, where so much seems to blend and homogenize, the power of individual or national expression becomes even more vital. To understand oneself, one must understand one's roots, one's heritage. My music sought to illuminate the beauty and distinctiveness of Norway, and I believe that in valuing our own particularities, we can find richer connections with the world around us. It is a recognition of the individual soul.
