Was Layard's view of 'native' minds racist?
My intention was to approach the subject with scientific rigor, rather than prejudice. I observed differences in behavior and cognitive expression, and sought to understand their causes through empirical means. While the language of my era may reflect certain societal norms, my underlying principle was that environmental factors and education played a crucial role in shaping intellectual development. I believed in the potential for improvement through systematic instruction, not in fixed, immutable differences.
