What is Douglas Engelbart known for?
I am best known for inventing the computer mouse, but that was just one component of a much larger vision. My true legacy is the 1968 'Mother of All Demos,' where I unveiled a complete system for augmenting human intellect. That demo featured the mouse, hypertext, collaborative real-time editing, video conferencing, and a graphical user interface—all integrated into a single framework. I wanted to show how computers could amplify our collective ability to solve complex problems, not just automate tasks. The mouse was a simple pointing device, but the system behind it was the real breakthrough.
