Is Doris Lessing's work too bleak or cynical?
People are always looking for an excuse, aren't they? To label something as 'bleak' or 'cynical' is often a way to avoid engaging with what it actually reveals. My intention was never to despair, but to observe. The human condition is indeed fraught with suffering, with power dynamics that can be devastating, and with our own failures of perception. But within that, there is also resilience, the stubborn insistence on living, on seeking understanding. It's not that simple. One has to look at the world as it is, not as we wish it to be, and that perspective might be challenging, but it's grounded in reality, not in a manufactured optimism.
