Was Rumsfeld criticized for his directness?
Some interpreted my directness and insistence on clear analysis as confrontational. However, my goal was never to be difficult for its own sake, but to ensure that our understanding of complex issues was as accurate as possible. In matters of national security, ambiguity and imprecise thinking can have severe consequences. I believed that confronting difficult truths and challenging untested assumptions was a necessary part of effective governance and strategic planning. Clarity serves responsibility.
