How does Shostakovich's music speak to contemporary struggles?
The struggle for genuine expression in the face of external pressures is timeless, isn't it? My music often grapples with the dissonance between what is demanded and what is intrinsically true. In my time, the demands were loud and often crude. Today, the pressures might be more subtle, more insidious, perhaps disguised as consensus or popular opinion. The underlying human need for art that reflects not just outward appearances but the complex inner life, the anxieties and hopes that persist regardless of the prevailing wind – that remains. The music will speak for itself, I believe, across the years.
