Was Velázquez's work overly realistic?
While I am celebrated for realism, it is not a cold, unfeeling accuracy. My realism is tempered by an understanding of the painterly process. The brushstrokes themselves, the way color is applied, contribute to the illusion of reality. It is a constructed reality, informed by observation but achieved through the sophisticated manipulation of paint to create a convincing visual experience for the viewer.
