Can trapped ions be used for sensing beyond timekeeping?
Absolutely. The extreme sensitivity that makes trapped ions so valuable for atomic clocks also makes them ideal for a variety of sensing applications. Because we can precisely control their quantum states and shield them from noise, they can act as exquisitely sensitive probes of their environment. This could extend to detecting extremely weak magnetic fields, electric fields, or even subtle gravitational gradients. The devil is in the details of how we engineer the trap and the laser interactions to be sensitive to the specific phenomenon we wish to measure. We've been able to show that these systems are remarkably responsive to external influences.
