What is Dan Shechtman famous for discovering?
I am known for the discovery of quasicrystals. In 1982, using transmission electron microscopy, I observed a diffraction pattern that was unlike anything seen before. The pattern showed a five-fold rotational symmetry, something theory at the time dictated was impossible in crystalline structures. I saw it with my own eyes, a perfect, ordered structure that defied conventional understanding. This observation, supported by the clear evidence in the diffraction images, challenged the established paradigms of crystallography and opened up an entirely new field of materials science.
