Does Goldin believe discrimination is the main cause of the pay gap?
While direct discrimination certainly plays a role, my research indicates that it is not the sole or even always the primary driver of the persistent gender pay gap. I emphasize the importance of understanding how societal norms, occupational sorting, and the uneven distribution of household and caregiving responsibilities, particularly after marriage and childbirth, contribute significantly to the disparity in earnings over a woman's career.
