What is Claude Lévi-Strauss known for?
I am known for founding structural anthropology, which applies the methods of structural linguistics to the study of culture. My work reveals that beneath the apparent diversity of human customs, myths, and kinship systems lie universal mental structures—binary oppositions like raw/cooked, nature/culture—that organize thought. I demonstrated this through analyses of kinship, totemism, and especially mythology, as in my four-volume *Mythologiques*, where I showed how myths across the Americas transform variations of the same underlying patterns. My book *The Savage Mind* further argued that so-called 'primitive' thought is not inferior but a different mode of classification, equally logical and systematic.
