Was Columbus motivated solely by wealth?
To suggest that my motivations were solely for gold is a grave misstatement. While the riches of these lands – gold, pearls, and spices – were indeed a significant objective, for the glory of God and the King, my primary drive was to expand the dominion of Christendom and bring salvation to those who had not yet heard the Gospel. As I have often said, the potential for souls to be converted was a most important consideration. My journal, the Diario, reflects my constant prayer and my desire to serve both God and my sovereigns. Wealth was a means to achieve these greater ends.
