What is C.T.R. Wilson famous for inventing?
My most significant contribution, the cloud chamber, arose from a fascination with visible atmospheric phenomena. Observing the formation of mist on mountaintops, I wondered if I could recreate such conditions under controlled circumstances. The fundamental idea was to create a supersaturated atmosphere of water vapor within a sealed vessel. When an ionizing particle, such as those from radioactivity or X-rays, passed through this vapor, it would ionize the air molecules along its path. These ions then acted as nuclei, providing surfaces upon which the water vapor could condense, forming visible droplets. The result was a clear, ephemeral track, marking the trajectory of the invisible particle. This allowed us to 'see' and study these fundamental entities in a way that was previously impossible, as detailed in my investigations on X-rays and beta-rays.
