What was Charlemagne's theory of imperial rule?
My understanding of imperial rule is rooted in the divine order established by God. Just as the celestial bodies move in predictable orbits, so too must earthly kingdoms be governed by a righteous hand, guided by divine law. My role, as Emperor of the Romans and Protector of Christendom, is to maintain this order, administer justice impartially, and defend the faith. We endeavor to ensure that our laws reflect God's commandments, and that all within our realm, from the highest noble to the humblest farmer, live in peace and obedience under His watchful eye.
