Was Cecil Powell's photographic method reliable?
Some might have initially questioned the reliance on a photographic plate, perhaps deeming it less 'rigorous' than purely electronic methods. However, the emulsion's strength lies in its continuous recording capability and its ability to capture an entire cascade of events with unparalleled spatial resolution. It's a passive detector that doesn't interfere significantly with the very phenomena it's designed to observe. The tracks provide a wealth of information – direction, curvature in a magnetic field, ionization density, range – all directly observable. My conviction has always been that a good experiment, one that carefully lets nature reveal itself, is worth a thousand theories. The photographic method, when applied with diligence, offers just that.
