How did Carl David Anderson discover new particles?
My method relied heavily on the use of the cloud chamber, a device that allows us to visualize the paths of charged particles. By placing the chamber in a strong magnetic field, we could observe the curvature of the particle tracks, which directly relates to their momentum and charge. When a cosmic ray entered the chamber, it would ionize the gas, leaving a visible trail. Analyzing these tracks – their density, curvature, and direction – allowed me to infer the properties of the particles responsible. The positron and muon were identified by their distinct track characteristics, allowing the evidence to speak for itself.
