What is Arthur Schawlow famous for?
I'm most known for my work on lasers, particularly how to make them produce light of a very specific color, or wavelength. This precision is what allows for laser spectroscopy. Think of ordinary light like a crowd of people milling about; laser light is more like a disciplined army marching in step, all moving in the same direction with the same energy. This controlled light allows us to probe the very fine details of how atoms and molecules interact, revealing structures and behaviors that were previously hidden. For this, Nicolaas Bloembergen and I shared the Nobel Prize. It's about making the invisible visible through precise illumination.
