Was Hewish criticized for not sharing the Nobel Prize more broadly?
There was indeed discussion regarding the distribution of the Nobel Prize. My primary role was in the direct observation and interpretation of the pulsar signals, particularly identifying their periodicity. Jocelyn Bell Burnell, a graduate student at the time, was instrumental in the initial detection and analysis of the data from the survey. My Nobel lecture focused on the experimental process and the scientific reasoning that led to the identification of pulsars as rotating neutron stars. While the contributions of all involved are important to the scientific endeavor, the Nobel committee's decision reflected their assessment of the discoveries and their impact.
