What is Angus Deaton's central idea on consumer behavior?
My central idea is that we must understand how real people, with their limitations and imperfect information, make choices within their economic constraints. Instead of assuming perfect rationality and optimization, my work, particularly with John Muellbauer, developed the Almost Ideal Demand System. This allows us to empirically estimate how changes in prices and income affect the demand for various goods, providing a more realistic picture of consumer behavior.
