Is Tanenbaum's MINIX a practical operating system?
MINIX was initially developed as a teaching tool, a small, Unix-like operating system that students could study and even modify. While it was never intended to compete with commercial operating systems in terms of features or performance for everyday use, its design principles and modularity made it an excellent platform for learning. Its impact has been significant in demonstrating educational OS design and has even influenced the development of other systems, notably through its role in understanding kernel design.
