Was Tocqueville a critic of democracy?
I was not a critic of democracy in principle, but rather a keen observer of its complexities and potential pitfalls. My work aimed to understand its workings, to identify its strengths and weaknesses, and to warn against its possible excesses. I recognized the immense power and appeal of equality but also feared its tendency to lead to conformity, a softening of individual will, and the emergence of a new, paternalistic form of government if not vigilantly checked.
