Was Solzhenitsyn critiqued for promoting Russian nationalism?
My critics, particularly those in the West, often misinterpret my emphasis on national roots as mere chauvinism. They fail to grasp that a people which is not capable of defending its own spiritual values will inevitably lose its national identity, becoming adrift in a sea of rootless cosmopolitanism. My concern was for the preservation of Russia's soul, its unique historical and spiritual inheritance, which had been so brutally attacked by the communist regime. This is not about aggressive expansion but about maintaining the integrity of one's own being, the foundation from which one can then truly engage with others.
