Summary
John Boyd's "A Discourse on Winning and Losing" presents maneuver warfare as critical to military success, originating from his insights into air-to-air tactics. The discourse, a series of briefings, culminates in "Revelation" and "The Essence of Winning and Losing," which encapsulates his learning into the O-O-D-A Loops concept. This concept explains what O-O-D-A Loops mean and why they are important, serving as a simple, elegant, and comprehensive conclusion to his study of conflict.
The work includes specific briefings such as "Patterns of Conflict," which offers a summation of military history, and "An Organic Design for Command and Control," detailing a design for command and control. Other included briefings are "The Strategic Game of ? and ?" and "The Conceptual Spiral," alongside the essay "Destruction and Creation." These various components collectively explore the essence of winning and losing through Boyd's developed theories and models.

His study and thought led him to produce a series of other briefings. They included a 37 slide briefing entitled "An Organic Design for Command and Control," a 58-slide briefing entitled "The Strategic Game of ? and ?," a 27-slide briefing entitled "The Conceptual Spiral," and one of the few essays he ever wrote called "Destruction and Creation."
